Review of Compaq Presario V3749AU

As I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, I was comparing two notebooks and I decided to go for Compaq Presario V3749AU. It’s been a couple of days since I am using this new notebook of mine and here’s a little review of its performance so far.

The system comes with just a single partition, Windows Vista Home Basic and a host of HP software pre installed. Since there is no Driver and application recovery disk, you have to make system recovery disks yourself which takes up two DVDs. There was a folder on C: with all the installers for the all the pre installed software, that was handy because that way I can reinstall specific software in future. You should backup that folder on a DVD as well. I did.

I wanted to install Windows Vista Business because I wanted to run IIS and all other Vista goodies like Windows Aero. The initial Windows experience index was 2.5, lower than what Microsoft recommends – 3.0. I noticed it was because the shared Video memory was only 64 MB, I went to BIOS and changed that to 128 MB – the maximum allowed and the score went up to 3.0. I installed Vista Business and was happy to find that Aero worked flawlessly. I am enjoying the Aero experience. :)Speed is good. Applications like Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio open quickly. It’s not blazing fast though. It’s on par or slightly better than my old Compaq Presario V4118AP which had a Pentium M 1.73 GHz processor. Graphics are certainly good, but I can feel a bit of jitteriness when I use Flip 3D to switch windows. I haven’t tried to install any games on it, but notebooks are not made for gaming for sure. The only game I have tried is Hearts and it runs slow on full screen mode with all the NVidia’s maximum quality settings.

The notebook is lightweight because of its 14.1″ screen. The keys are smooth and the touchpad is good. Integrated webcam is of good quality although its a VGA cam. The Cyberlink YouCam software that is included adds some nice lighting (or may be its in the cam itself) so images at night are also bright. The special thing about this notebook is the touch sensitive buttons for volume control. Mic and headphones jacks are in front instead of sides which is also a good idea. This notebook also doesn’t heat up much. May be because it has vents on the back and not underneath. This is a great improvement because my old notebook had vents on the belly and it used to heat up a lot when used on an uneven surface like a bed or lap because the vents would get blocked. That is not a problem with this one. Vents are behind where I can feel warm air being pushed out.

The collection of bundled software is very good. CyberLink OEM suit is included for all CD-DVD burning purposes. It has fairly good features and is comparable to Nero. CyberLink YouCam is the software for webcam which can also capture movies and snapshots. Adobe reader 8 and SQL Server 2005 express edition are also there. I don’t understand why SQL Server is included. That is something only developers will use! Anyway I liked it. A trial version of Office 2007 is also pre installed. It keeps asking you for registration key every time you run any application, and it won’t accept any keys I would enter! I am not sure which version was that but ultimately I had to install a fresh copy of Office 2007. A nice DVD player is also bundled called DVDPlay which also has a quick launch touch sensitive button. It starts automatically when you insert a movie DVD. Altec Lancing speakers have a good quality output as well.

Overall its a good notebook computer with a nice balance of performance and style. 2 Ghz, Dual Core, 64 bit processor and 2 GB of memory gives it a lot of power. NVidia’s graphics and included applications promise a good multimedia experience. It is small, lightweight and stylish. At Rs. 35500, it is one of the best budget notebook computers out there.

Planning on buying this baby today. Sure hope she’s worth it! Any regrets or points you’d like to mention to a soon-to-be fellow-owner?

I got it from Hypercity on Malad, Link Road in Mumbai. They have some of the lowest prices. Hypercity means valid with bill and nothing extra for credit card either. Next best prices were at e-zone which belongs to Future Group (Big Bazaar) so you can may be check out nearby e-zone outles in your area.

Yash, does it come with a carry case? Or did you have to pay extra for it?

Yes it does come with a carry case and nothing extra for it. It’s a fairly large one though for this notebook. You can carry a lot of things besides the notebook and its power adapter.

How does the lappy fare with graphics apps ? Mostly 3D and designer apps like Maya or Photoshop? The processor looks meaty, but can you check its performance with these sorrt of apps? What about moderate gaming ? As in NFSMW and the like ? PLease, reply ASAP.
Regards.

Hey there. Neat review. I’m keen on getting this laptop, but doesn’t Turion X2 drain more battery than a C2D ?

@Srikanth

You don’t get the OS and driver CDs. As I have mentione din the post all the drivers and inatallers for OEM software are there on the C:\, you need to burn them on a DVD. You can take backup of the entire initial setup (including OS) with Vista’s recovery disk wizard. It takes two DVDs.

I am not sure about this. I don’t typically use the notebook on battery and even if I do it’s only for 15-20 minutes. I use my notebook as a desktop pc – one which I can move easily between my home and office. :)

I haven’t run any graphics heavy apps or games yet because I use it mainly for programming. But I doubt it will support any high end gaming stuff. Even the game of Hearts doesn’t run smoothly on full screen with Animations on. So NFS or Quake will surely kill this one.
Well as of now notebooks are not suitable for gaming. Period.

hi,i brought this laptop on 10th june in delhi for rs35000.
it has a very good configuration, especially graphics.
i can easily run the following-
need for speed prostreet(game)
photoshop cs3 by adobe
office 2007
many other audio and video converting applications.

it has better graphics than other similarily priced intel laptops.
this one is cheap only due the fact that it has a 14inch screen and an amd processor.
a similar model my intel will cost you about rs40000.

it is one of the best buys(trust me)
very useful for students and for use in home and office.

I just saw the HP website, and it says that this line of products (Compaq V3700 series) has been discontinued (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF10a/321957-321957-3329742-89318-89318-3629625.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_INEN). Is it still okay to go for this model? I’m worried about after-sales service, driver availability etc.

I have bought this notebook just today and was concerned about not having an installation or OS CD. Fortunately I found this review which was helpful in more ways than one. Yash, you have done a great job. Thanks a lot.

I have used both AMD and Intel and honestly I haven’t found any difference at all! It’s all about brand perception. Intel is perceived to be a “better” brand and so it’s a tad more expensive than AMD. Processor is the last thing that we need to look at these days. Processors any way wield so much more power than any average users is ever going to use. Go for AMD!

This Lap top is good for Media as well as gaming. Even other applications are good too. Till Now i did not find any trouble Except Software Part. But one thing i donot understand is it’s ’64 bit Turion” Mobile technology And How it is Making Difference from Other LAP tops In the Market.

And we can install upto max 64 bit OS. that is also an advantage. but Except its recomended “Vista Home basic”. Nothing Has been told which other OS will be suitable.
If any Body have a better idea May Mail to me my mail ID is ” ffe0@yahoo.com” This is only for my information.

Yash! After months of watch-tapping and yawn-inducing Halo 2 sessions (amongst others), I found one of the reasons for this baby’s slightly lower bling-bling: Not only are the default drivers OLD (Nob ’07 – thats right, ZERO SEVEN!), but also, Nvidia’s bloody Powermizer’s always running the 7150m at 100mhz to save power, instead of the rated 450Mhz! Download the tiny Powermizer Switch (http://www.box.net/shared/v7jpoateoq), and use Alacrity PC for your games, you’ll get a vastly improved performance!

Cheers!
