Logo Tales.com – a blog about famous logos

one comment

I’ve started a new blog – Logo Tales. It’s a blog about famous corporate and brand logos. LogoTales tells the story of logos. Their history, their meaning, little known facts about the logos and interesting trivia.

I’ve been attracted by logos for a time. Whenever I see a logo I try to analyze it and try to find out its meaning. I was always interested in knowing how a logo relates to the brand that it is representing. When I was looking for a good logo for Trade4Half.com (for which I also conducted a poll on this blog) I had a good debate about the effectiveness of logos with my friend Ullas. We discussed about some famous logos and their connection with the brand. I thought may be I can write something about the logos and their meanings, significance, the messages they convey and their history.

So thus was born LogoTales.com. Because every logo has a story to tell!

Tell me which logo should I use

I need some input from the readers about the following three logos. These are for the new venture that we are cooking up.
Me and my friend Ullas had some debate about which logo to use and then we decided to ask the audience.

If you were to put your money on a company, but knew nothing about the business model and were just shown 3 logos to make up your choice, which logo would you choose? Give a reason for your choice as well.

Why don’t they teach this in Engineering colleges…??!!!

leave a comment

Freshers applying for jobs have always amazed me with their desperation to get a job! I have posted a few job openings on Naukri.com and I have started receiving totally unrelated applications from aspiring candidates (mostly just out of their colleges). I get really annoyed when people apply to any and every damn job with the word software or IT in it. Come on man, at least read thorough the job specifications before hitting that Apply button!

What really gets on my nerves is when people send bulk emails to recruiters. See a sample resume that I received today -

I call this spamming and treat it just like that! If you can’t spend half a minute to send an exclusive email to me, then why the hell should I take out my time to read your resume? Such resumes end up in my trash bin straight away! I am not sure if there are other recruiters/employers like me (may be I am the only one of the species) but I really believe if these people can’t take out some moments to at least write a personalised email for an important thing such as job hunting, then they will never be able to do anything special in their lives!

Why they don’t teach how to apply for a job in engineering colleges? Today the market is hot and these people are in demand so they can get away with such unprofessional behaviour and will eventually land a job somewhere. What will happen when India’s biggest USP – the cost advantage – starts to vanish? How will these people survive then?

Digility

leave a comment

We are starting a new venture – digility.com. A software portal for all types of mobile devices and PDAs. We will be selling third part software, games and other digital content for mobile devices on this site. We plan to make it a one stop shop for software for any type of mobile device. It will have software for Windows Mobile, Palm, BlackBerry, Symbian, Linux and Java based mobile phones and PDAs.

Digility the name is a combination of the words, Digital-Mobility. We have just started the development. It will take bout three months to develop the site, get the payment processing in place and test it out. Then we will be filling the database with applications. We will be contacting hundreds and thousands developers who develop software for mobile devices and already sell on other such web sites like Handango, PocketGear, PalmGear etc.

Its going to be a mega project from our perspective and we will be committing most of our resources to this project in the coming times.

The mobile software market is dominated by two heavyweight – Handango and Motricity. We believe there’s a place for a third player as well and we can give a cheaper option to the developers to list their applications and an additional distribution channel. For users, we can provide a better service then the competitors and freedom from some rediculous charges levied by others like “Download Protection Service” charge.

A lot of work needs to be done. We are building a database of developers and devices. We gotta find the best option to process the credit card payments and we also have to finalize the cost and royalty structure. We plan to give 75% royalty to developers, keeping 25% of the gross sales for us. This is far better than 40 to 60 percent commission charged by the market leaders!

I am excited!

Janoos.com – my new venture

Janoos logo

I just launched my first Dot Com venture Janoos.com. Janoos is an online bookmark management service. Janoos is meant to be your browser’s homepage.

I had been using a static HTML page as my homepage for years. I used to add all my favorite links to that page. Somehow I have never liked the idea of bookmarks or favorites in the browser. I had created that page because whenever I opened my browser, I got a page full of my favorite links. All I had to do was click. Just a click. With a single click I could to go to my desired web destination. Quite a few people have borrowed it from me and set as their homepage. Editing that page was a tedious task because I had to manually edit that file. But it was far better than having Google or Yahoo as my homepage or no homepage at all.

Then one day I thought well why not move this page online and why not share it with others? So the idea of Janoos.com was born. We started developing without deciding a name for the service. I wanted to create a page that was lightening fast to load. That meant all the images and external files were strict no-no. There was only one image – the logo on the links page, later on I added one more image for opening the links in a new window. To make the page load faster, I resized and resampled the logo in Photoshop till I got it under 1 KB. Yes, the small logo on the links page is less than 1 KB! For editing the page that is to add/modify/delete links and categories, I decided to use Ajax because I didn’t want the entire page to reload just to add a link. So the edit links page became Javascript heavy and we also included several images on that page.

While my team members were developing the basic functionality, I started hunting for a name. There were a few conditions for the name – First and most important was that I should get a .com for that name. It is extremely difficult to get a .com for any name these days. Then I wanted the name to be short and memorable. I also wanted it to sound a little crazy ..meaningless at first like the tradition of the Internet. And then I wanted it to have some meaning after all that resembled the very idea behind the site/service. But the name should also cover up any future services offered by the site. So it was a tough challenge. I mulled over hundreds of names. I searched thorough dictionary, thesaurus, Internet and tried myriad of names. Some were too long to remember, some weren’t catchy enough, and some didn’t have a .com domain available. Then while searching through Wikipedia, I came across Janus – the Greek god of doorways and pathways. Janoos with “double O” instead of “U” immediately sounded a ring in my mind. I checked for janoos.com and it was available. I immediately booked janoos.com and all of its variants .info, .org etc. So the service was now Janoos. After I had booked the domain, Rakhee, my team member pointed out that Yahoo and Google too had two Os in their names. Well……!!! 8-|

The basic structure of Janus is similar to what I had on the static html page. It has categories and links on the user’s personalised homepage. I decided to include Google search as well so that even search can work right from the homepage. And since I was putting search, I said well why not make some money so instead of plain search, I added Google AdSense for search. Let’s see how it works out. Suggestions from my team members and some of my/their friends were implemented to add a few more features. I invited some of my friends to beta test the site and after a few tweaks here and there, we went live yesterday.

There are still many more features to be added like RSS feeds, news and weather updates, More search engines, some pre configured links, page sharing, extension for Firefox to add a link from anywhere and similar Active X control for IE. Possibilities are endless. I hope this will be a hit amongst users. I have seen some other bookmark management services but none of them provide single click shortcuts. That is our USP. The reason why I didn’t use browser’s bookmarks was because I had to click multiple times and wade through sub menus. With Janoos, there are no sub menus, no flashy graphics, just a plain page with all your links. Just click n go.

People ask me how are you going to make money from this. At this point of time I am not quite sure. If the site finds a good user base then I will think of ways to make money. I don’t want to charge users to use the service. And I also don’t want to display banner ads or even text ads like Google. Anything that slows down the loading of the page is not allowed. AdSense for search may earn a few dollars but nothing major as such. Lets wait and watch. For the time being my prime concern is to make site more user friendly and add more useful features.

Do check out www.janoos.com.
