Personal

My Love Story Part 3

Almost a month had passed since I proposed her and she refused. One day I got a call from her and she said she wants to meet me. Now something had started to happen on the other end too. We met at a temple near our school and talked for about an hour. In the last one month she had become restless and couldn’t stop thinking about me. She remembered the school days and the happy moments we had shared in school with all those academic rivalries and stuff. For her completing her CA was of utmost importance everything else was secondary. We decided to keep in touch and the old friendship blossomed again.

We started calling each other regularly. Mostly it was me who would call her at her office during the afternoon when her boss would be away for lunch. The calls started to last longer. 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, half an hour. Sometimes I would sneak out of home to make the call if my parents were at home. At that time a public call would cost a Rupee and pulse rate was three minutes. I remember putting 17 coins once! She too emptied a whole bowl of coins her dad had accumulated in a few months.

By then we were into TYBCom – the last year of our college degree. I used to go to college and then to a coaching class. I would reach the class early, and make a call to her and it would last for as long as it could before I had to get in the class. Now I was into computers, had a computer at home and was even planning to open computer coaching classes. Bijal on the other hand had computers as compulsory subject in her college in the last year and she was completely alien to the subject. I seized the opportunity and offered to teach her computers. At first she was reluctant but once she opened the book, she knew she needed help and there I was! :)

So she came to my home for the first time to learn computers. We would learn computers and talk. Learning computers started to become a pretext for us to meet. Parents had no objections obviously and very soon I started my computer classes so the office became our meeting spot. Slowly but surely she started to fall in love with me.

Some silly things also happened while we were in college, little fights, not talking to each other, patching up. Once we got in a fight and then I cut my thumb with a blade and wrote I am Sorry with my blood. Super filmy stuff! If I would gift her something she would ask me to keep it with me cause she could not take it home. Sometimes she would take the gift home and would tell her mom they were from some of her other friends.

It was good till it lasted. Soon the college was over and the official excuse to meet was over too. Now was the time to begin with the real life. My computer classes didn’t last long. I got a job, Bijal also got her articleship shifted to another CA. Reason being the CA she was working for wanted his son to marry her! By that time it was an unofficial understanding between us – we were for each other and no one could come between us.

As the official reasons to meet dried up, we had to fabricate reasons to meet. Especially her because Indian parents are Indian parents. So we would meet up in the evening when we would both return from our work. She would take leaves prior to her CA exams and would go a library to read. I would accompany her at the end of the day on her way back home. We used to meet alternate days, sometimes daily. When I changed job and joined Magnet, we would meet early in the morning just before we would go to our offices. We had some regular meeting places and shopkeepers and restaurant waiters started recognizing us. Once I reached late and Bijal had just left after waiting for me and the shopkeeper of a nearby shop informed me she had left. We were just starting our careers and we didn’t have mobile phones then. I got my first mobile phone in 2004. Even to this day one particular guy at MM in Malad recognizes us and whenever we happen to go there we meet him.

2006 arrived, Bijal cleared her CA and achieved her goal. In the meantime I had left my job and started my company back in 2005. Bijal helped me incorporate my company as a Private Limited Company. In fact she did most of the paper work despite her exams approaching. Now we were both in the career consolidation phase and by now it was clear to our parents as well as to where we were heading.

Our parents have always been supportive of our relationship. We never actually told our parents we loved each other and we wanted to marry. As things unraveled, it became obvious to them and they never objected. Bijal was very afraid her parents won’t approve of our relationship. But I knew her parents back from school days and I knew they won’t have any problem with me. Once her dad caught us eating Sandwiches together and when Bijal went home asked her a sarcastic question – “Are you still hungry?” Bijal thought that was the end of our meeting days but I knew that was not the case. Bijal’s parents wanted her to complete her education first so that was her priority. I have never really told my parents, I want to marry this girl and they never asked me.

It just happened.

Somewhere near the end of 2006 probably around September I just said to her how about getting married next Valentine’s Day? We were together for almost six years and I just thought Valentine’s Day would be the best day to get married. And we just decided we are getting married on Feb 14, 2007. So I told my parents I am getting married on 14/2. Met Bijal’s parents as well and told them about our decision. Again the kind hearted parents agreed to us. Even then I didn’t believe in looking for auspicious dates and stuff. Her father tried to suggest a different auspicious date, but I was firm on Feb 14. So everyone gave in.

So we arranged everything in the next 3-4 months and put together a wedding. Come 14 February, 2007 and we were a married couple.

And life has been excellent so far. At the time of our wedding we had decided we will never spend a Valentine’s Day at home so every year around Valentine’s Day we take a 2 week long vacation and go to far off places. This is the first Valentine’s Day that we are celebrating at home because we are awaiting the arrival of a new bundle of joy soon.

We have known each other for over 23 years now. Life has taught me one thing – if you really want something just go for it. Don’t think. Things will fall in place.

Life is awesome.

My Love Story Part 2

Phone rang. I picked up and heard a familiar voice after a long time. “Yash it’s me, Bijal”. I literally missed a heartbeat! It had been more than 3.5 years since we had left the school. We were in different colleges and there was absolutely no contact, no phones, nothing. Don’t know what made her call me but she called and that call changed the lives of both of us. It rekindled the latent feelings and I absolutely could not sleep that night. I kept thinking about her day and night. Days passed and I just could not get her out of my mind. I decided I had to tell her about my feelings.

Being a very to the point and direct person – and one who believes in the power of letters – I decided to write my feelings in a letter. A more mature letter than the one I sent a few years ago and I also decided to hand it over personally. I very carefully drafted the letter about two pages long and the letter ended with a very direct question – “Would you like to change your name to Bijal Yash Gadhiya?”!! Well that’s me! I am in one sided love with a girl since third standard, I haven’t even talked to her for more than 3 years and I know for sure she does not have similar feelings towards me and here I am proposing her to marry me when we are still in college. Naive, stupid whatever you may call it, but it was just a dumb guy madly in love with a girl for as long as he can remember.

When I look back, I think a sensible guy might have decided to get in a stable friendship first and then take it forward slowly. But I had one final goal in mind and just went for that.

I decided to hand over the letter on her 19th birthday which was coming soon. Now was the time to get in the detective mode. I wanted to know everything about her that I could find, her office address, where she goes, what she does – everything. All I had was her office phone number. She was studying for CA and was doing her articleship at some CA’s office. So I thought she must be going to the college sometime in the morning. I decided to stand near the opening of the street where she lived and wait for her to come and hand over the letter. The day arrived and I got to the spot at around 8 in the morning. Waited for her to leave for college. I waited and waited and waited. She never arrived. Later on I came to know she used to leave earlier in the morning.

Plan 1 failed so I decided to catch her at the office. I only had the office number, I used MTNL’s online directory and got the address of the office. Reached the office it was closed. Nobody was answering the office phone either. A CA’s office can’t possibly be closed in the afternoon. I thought it must have moved or the directory might have incorrect address. So I decided to call the home of her boss! Got the name of the boss from the office number and from that name found the boss’ home phone number. Called there, posed as a client and asked for office address and I got the same address from boss’ wife. Finally someone at the office picked up the phone, I asked for Bijal I was told she had shifted to another CA. Got the number of that CA, found his office address from the directory and went there the next day.

And I saw her after almost 3 years. She had changed a lot, she had got glasses and was kind of unrecognisable. I too had changed a lot, at first she didn’t recognise me either. She thought I was a client of her boss. I wished her belated Happy Birthday and said I had something very important to say. She had no clue what I might have in store but she called me in the evening and we decided to meet after a couple of days. She had a very busy schedule so she asked me to come to the Kandivali station and said I could accompany her while she walked back home. I went there, handed over the letter to her and the reaction and the answer was exactly as I had expected.

No.

Part 1, Part 3

My Love Story Part 1

The year was 1989. I was in standard 3 and had just joined a new school. I was shy, introvert and a bit scared by being in this large school. One day in the class, one of our teachers asked the name of our school. Nutan….Nutan everyone started shouting. Nopes nopes that was not the answer the teacher was looking for. “Shree J P Shroff Nutan Vidya Mandir” said one girl siting on the first bench. I looked at her, that was the first time I had noticed her and in fact that was the first time even I came to know the full name of the school! Wow! I said to myself, that girl is smart! Who is she? I asked someone. Her name is Bijal, I was told.

Bijal. That was her name. That IS her name. And she is my life.

So that was how I came to know of her.

Then it so happened that one day our class teacher rearranged the seating arrangements. Well in a typical Indian school there are benches and they are arranged in columns and boys and girls occupy one side of classroom each. Our class teacher Jyoti Mam was fed up by the constant chit chat going on amongst the students. So she decided to rearrange the seating and made one boy and one girl share a bench. She randomly picked one boy and one girl and allocated them to a bench. I had two wishes – one, to get a first bench and second, to share the bench with that smart girl. :P Lo and behold both my wishes came true. I don’t know why and how but the teacher paired me with the smartest girl in class. I was a rank new comer in the class and she was a ranker. That was the best day of my life till then! :)

I was good in studies and it wasn’t late before I started getting good marks and got everyone’s attention. And that’s also when the academic rivalry started to flourish between the two of us. We two were the undisputed scholars of the class. And exam after exam we would fight over who got better marks and a higher rank. It would alternate. Both of us would bring the best in each other.

She was first in standard 3.
I excelled in standard 4 and was first not just in class but in school.
She came back in standard 5 and became the top ranker.
Standard 6, it was me again.
Standard 7 it was her.

By eighth standard we were teens. I have always been attracted by smartness and the liking and fondness that I had developed for her was becoming a crush by then. I couldn’t stop thinking about her all day. I had also developed another interest by then – comics – I was an avid comics reader and was also into creating my own comic line that affected my studies and I permanently withdrew from the rank race. But she was becoming my fascination and I did what many stupid 14 year olds would do. I wrote her a letter.

A love letter!

I don’t exactly remember what was written in the letter, may be just I love you and drawn a heart with an arrow. Very filmy! When we think of it today we just cant help stop laughing. I actually had guts to POST that letter to her home!!! I thought I was very smart to the extent that I put the letter in a small envelop and wrote – this envelop should be opened by Bijal only – and put that envelop in a larger one and addressed it to her home. It didn’t even occur to me that that stupid gimmick of mine wont prevent someone else from opening the letter and that the letter can get in anybody’s hands and it can do a lot of damage.

Luckily nothing happened.

The letter ended up in Bijal’s mom’s hands and she tore it with rage. She asked Bijal about who might have sent the letter and whose handwriting it could be. Now Bijal says she did recognize my handwriting but she didn’t tell her mom! She won’t tell me why but she didn’t want to ruin my life at school by blowing the whistle.

And then after the tenth, the school life came to an end. By that time my crush had somewhat subsided. One major factor was height! She grew taller than me! It may sound silly but when you are 15 and everyone around you is growing taller and stronger and you are not, that has immense effect on a boy’s psyche. So school ended and we lost contact. I didn’t see her until three years later barring a couple of chance encounters on road.

Part 2, Part 3

Mensa test experience

I had taken the Mensa Admission Test back in the month of September. Got my results last week.

There were two tests, one had 50 questions and the other had three sub tests with 15 or 20 questions each. All were multiple choice questions and we had to solve them in amazingly small amount of time. We got some 10 or 12 minutes for the first test and about 2 to 3 minutes each for the each of the sub tests for the second one. The test charges were Rs. 300 and we were told we would be getting the results back in about 6-8 weeks. Well, it didn’t come back in 6-8 weeks, took like more than 4 months. The examiner said the test papers will go to Pune where a psychologist will check the scores and ascertain the IQ.

I scored 84th percentile. Not enough to join the elite club of super intelligent. In order to be a member you have to score in 98th percentile or above. According to this table at American Mensa that converts and IQ of 115. I thought of my IQ to be somewhere around 120, so that was close enough. 84th percentile onwards is the high average of IQ in the population. Some consolation. :P

TataSky+ HD DTH

Choosing a DTH provider in India is tougher than choosing a spouse. I have had a Full HD 32″ LCD TV for a year but I was still running on the old cable connection. Finally I thought it’s time to move on. Main lure was the presence of HD channels. Lots of channels are now available in High Definition and I also wanted a DVR to be able to record shows and pause live TV. So I began hunting for a DTH service.

I had following options to choose from

TataSky
Dish TV
Airtel Digital TV
Reliance Big TV
Videocon D2H
Sun Direct DTH

First I asked my cable guy if they have a Set top box. They do have but it’s not HD and no DVR so it was out of contention. Hathway Cable has started HD services but they are not available in my locality. (Cable guys have divided areas amongst themselves to avoid competition)

Dish and TataSky are oldest in India. Airtel, Reliance, Videocon and Sun are new and boast of MPEG-4 compression which seemingly has better quality over MPEG-2 of the older players. So At first I decided to only look at the four new players.

Sun is strong in south but their HD offerings were least exciting. Their web site is also enough to put someone off instantly. So that was out immediately.

Reliance is boasting of providing 250 HD channels but all of them are upscaled. The real HD channels are only 6 whereas Airtel and Videocon have 10 and 11 respectively. So the choice was quickly narrowed down to Airtel and Videocon.

I was more interested in English movies and infotainment channels like Discovery and Nat Geo. Videocon had more HD channels that mattered to me. Airtel didn’t have ESPN, Star Cricket and Travel XP in HD instead they had UTV stars and History TV. Videocon didn’t have History TV in HD but had the other three. The main lure was Travel XP, because I had seen that one at a hotel and instantly liked it. Only Videocon and Dish TV carry Travel XP at the moment. Videocon had the best price. Their highest package (Platinum+HD) included all their channels and HD for Rs. 441 per month and even less if I prepaid for entire year. The same thing was costing Rs.486 at Airtel where HD had to be bought separately and all HD channels were not part of that bouquet. Videocon only had a 160 GB hard disk in the DVR against 320 GB of Airtel but I thought I could live with that.

Meanwhile I also checked out TataSky and Dish TV. Dish didn’t really have too much to offer in HD department and they didn’t have a HD DVR either (at least I couldn’t find one on their site) besides Dish’s highest plan was at 550 something so I put a cross mark against it. Then I looked at TataSky. They had 8 HD channels. The 3 missing ones were Colors, Movies Now and Travel XP. Missing Movies Now HD was a huge minus for me. TataSky was the first to introduce DVR in India and they have the largest capacity disk on DVR – 500 GB which can record 700 hours of SD programming. That was huge and they had a super annual package that included all of the channels including HD for one year and a fixed price for the entire year. Any new channels added in the next year will be part of this package as well. That was a huge advantage, but videocon was still cheaper and had two HD channels that I cared about – MoviesNow and TravelXP.

So I decided to go with Videocon. I went online to purchase and boom! The HD DVR was no longer available! I called the customer support to enquire for the same, the guy put me hold for 10 minutes and the call dropped. That kind of put me off. Next day I got a call from them and I was told the HD DVR is now available only in Mumbai so they have taken it off website and are selling it only in cash. I didn’t like it. I weighed different options again and once again came to the conclusion that Videocon was best. So I was ready to buy it. Then I decided to check out their Facebook account. And over there I read a comment from someone about History TV not being available! I knew History was not available in HD but not at all?? What the hell!!

History channel was recently relaunched and rebranded as History TV 18 and had some kick ass shows like Ice Road Truckers and was an absolute must! Even my cable guy provided it! Now this was too much. Videocon didn’t have a great website, DVR was not available online, customer support didn’t really look that good and the DVR had only 160 GB storage. Videocon was cancelled and I went back to drawing board. Now the choice was between Airtel and TataSky. I had called TataSky and confirmed, they too had switched to MPEG-4. Airtel had better HD package but was expensive, TataSky had a larger capacity disk and on the online forums I read they had been adding new HD channels regularly over last couple of months. Two months back they didn’t even have these many HD channels. They are slow in adding channels but they do add. And with the Mega Lite pack that I was considering I would get them all at no extra cost. TataSky also has a service called Video On Demand where I can connect the box to Internet and I can download videos, even movies and shows from the past 5 days and I would have ample space to store all the content. At this point I think its a unique feature provided only by TataSky.

So TataSky it was. TataSky+ HD to be specific. I paid Rs. 10,200 for which I got HD DVR with 500 GB hard disk, full year subscription for the Mega Lite pack which included all channels carried by TataSky including HD, 12 showcase movies and 1 year subscription to BusinessWorld magazine. And under a special offer I got 500 Rs. credit in my account. Paid it yesterday, and it was installed at my home today morning.

And I am loving it already! The HD clarity is awesome! Finally my HD TV is doing what it was supposed to do! The DVR is perfect, I have already set it up to record a couple of movies that will be telecast today. They have an app for Android phones where by I can give instructions to record any program from anywhere. In fact I set up one of the movies to be recorded from my mobile. Videocon and Airtel have such programs too but TataSky’s app is most polished and slick amongst all.

I am happy with my decision. Having a couple more HD channels would have been great but I am sure they will be added soon.

Isko laga dala to life jhingalala!

Online passport application in India – don’t trust the passport website

So you are a programmer, work whole day in front of a computer, do your shopping online, pay your bills online and file your IT return online and so you thought you will also be able to renew your passport online? Ha ha ha come back to the real world dumbass!

You think you are very smart and you will be able to save some time and not have to stand in a queue by filling a passport application form online? No you idiot! There’s no escaping the queues. It doesn’t matter if we let you fill a form online and give you a date and time to come and submit your papers. It doesn’t matter whether we write on our website that you can submit your application anywhere – a regional passport office or a passport application collection center. You have to somehow magically figure it out that we accept it only at our regional passport office and boo ya if you ended up visiting your nearest collection center and wasting your appointment and time.

You see you IT type people really think you can do everything online and electronically like they do in the west and think you will be able to save your precious time. Huh! NO my boy! This is India and we are public servants – heck we are public’s masters, YOU are our servants. We will make you feel as miserable as we can before we will do anything for you get that?

So if you wanna file your damn application at this center come at 7 in the morning, stand in a queue for a couple of hours, at 9 we will give out only 50 tokens and then entertain only those lucky few. If you aren’t one of them, screw you. Get lost and come back tomorrow.

Whatever is written on this URL about online application procedure is bullshit. Come on dude, you are 30 and you have been living in this country for as long, you gotta see this coming. Don’t be so naive!

Listen we really don’t give a fuck about the value of your time. Man, value of time? Where did you hear that term? At some comedy show? See we are stuck here in this mundane job and we will be doing this for the rest of our life so don’t bother us with all those rosy notions of yours. The rules are written on the notice board, read them and fuck off.

That’s my experience with trying to file my passport application online. I had gotten my passport when I was 15. Now I want to change my photo, address and signature on my passport. I landed up on India Passport’s website  and was delighted to know the procedure can be done online.

I filled up the form, I got a date and time to visit a passport office and submit my papers. I collected all papers and today on my appointed date and time visited the nearest passport application collection center at Kandivali. There I was told it is accepted at Worli not there. If I want to submit it there I have to come at 9 and get a token. That’s it. No arguments. We don’t know what is written on the site. Read the notice board and come later. Some other people told me the queue for tokens begins to form at 7 and they give only 50 tokens.

So much for online procedure!

We in India are moving procedures online and making everything “e” only for the sake of it. E-Governance is a hogwash. Pure bullshit! You want to file IT return online? File the return, download a file and send it by post to Bangalore. When was the last time you sent something by post? I don’t even know where the nearest letterbox is. You don’t want to send it by post then sign it digitally. How do you sign it digitally? You need a digital signature. How to get a digital signature? That’s an offline procedure.

You want to get a marriage certificate? Visit the local municipal office, stand in a queue for a couple of hours, they give you a date after one month. Visit on that date, stand in the queue again for a couple of hours and then they do your procedure and you are told to come again after 15 days to collect your certificate. And when you go to collect the certificate once again stand in a queue, give some chai pani (bribe) and get your certificate! The story is same if you want a ration card, a shop and establishment license, an import export code or anything! Queues, queues and more queues.

Heck even at private establishments the things aren’t ahy better. I needed my signature verification done from my bank which unfortunately is Axis Bank. I visited them last Saturday for the purpose. I was asked to come on Monday. I went on Tuesday morning, I was told the system is down please come at 3. I went back at 3, the lady whom I was interacting with had gone for lunch. I waited 20 minutes and finally got my letter. Axis Bank does not have a set lunch time for the staff so they have to squeeze it in between the working hours. And customers have to wait.

So literally nobody in India gives a fuck about others’ time. Really we Indians just do not value time. We have accepted queues as part of life. Train tickets, movie tickets, bus stand, auto stand, air port security check, store checkout counters, places of worship….queues are everywhere. Heck I have even seen a queue outside jewellery shops! Indians stand in a queue even to buy gold! Even processes that seem online have an offline component. If you buy movie ticket online, you still have to get the actual ticket that will allow you entry in the hall from the ticket counter for which you have to stand in the queue.

Online passport application….yeah right!

Hone do dil ko Fanaa

One of my favourite songs from A. R. Rahman. The world came to know of Rahman through Slumdog Millionaire. But Slumdog is no way near the best music of Rahman. This is another of his gems.

Not just the music but also the lyrics – written by the genius Gulzar – are fabulous! It has a trance like quality and the word Fanaa just resonates in your head.

The word Fanaa means means annihilation in Sufism, a mystic tradition of Islam. It also means destruction or destroyed in love in Urdu/Hindi. In Urdu/Hindi, it can convey the meaning of totally lost in love, or completely engulfed by love.

The Fanaa in background is by the great Rahman himself.

Here’s the song and the lyrics in Hindi, English and English explanation of the words.

Put on the headphones, turn up the volume, close the eyes and experience the trance!

Fanaa, Fanaa, Fanaa….

Hone do DIL ko Fanaa!
(Let your heart be destroyed in love)

Hone do Dard ko Tabah!
(Let your pain be destroyed)

Udne do har ek wo tamanna
(Let all those desires fly)

Aao na aao na aao na hona hai Fanaa!
Aao na aao na aao na hona hai Fanaa!
(Come come come, we have to get destroyed in love)

Ulfat ka hai dariya, ye jaan ek katra
Dariya mein hai katra ya katre mein hai dariya
(There’s a sea of Love, this life is just a drop
Is there a drop in the sea or a sea in the drop?)

Saaya hai badan ka ya tan mein chhupa saaya
Dono mil gaye to kya tan kya saaya
(Is this a shadow of the body or body of a shadow
If both come together you cant tell them apart)

Hone do DIL ko Fanaa!
(Let your heart be destroyed in love)

Hone do Dard ko Tabah!
(Let your pain be destroyed)

I need to be FREE……

A Little Sweet, A Little Sour
A Little Close Not Too Far
All I Need, All I Need
All I Need Is To Be Free……….

Enough of taking responsibility for others’ fuck ups! Life is too precious to continue to bother with all that.

My favourite exaggerations

I often use exaggerations to make a point. My favourite ones -

Another zero will be added to India’s population
I use this to signify that significant amount time will be spent or has been spent doing something very trivial.

By the time I reach office, a zero would be added to India’s population
By the time it will compile, a zero would be added to India’s population
A zero was added to India’s population by the time you wrote this code!

Using extreme years
The remoteness of the year depends on the degree of time spent since the event I am talking about

I passed out of college in the last century = Its been many years since I passed out of college
I had my lunch in 2005 = I had my lunch a few hours back
This code was written in 14th century = Its very very old code
I had sent the mail in 1966 = I had sent the email a long back
I have been asking for these documents since 1945! = I have been asking for these documents since a long time

A person would bathe with this much water
When I see someone wasting water on something, I use this

The amount of water you used to wash this glass, someone could have bathed with it!
A buffalo could have bathed with the water you used to wash your face/hair/handkerchief or whatever!

You will send me to a village
I use this on my team members. I use this to signify that what they are doing is important. So important that if they fail, I would have to close the company and go to some village and do farming. It makes more sense when said in Hindi.

बेटा अगर ये server पे फटा ना, तो हम दोनोंको गांव जाना पडेगा!
(If this goes wrong on the server, we both will have to go to a village!)

सचीन, लातुर / झुमरीतलैया / जौनपुर का दो टिकीट ला भाई, आज ये गांव भेजने वाला है!
(Sachin, bring two tickets for Latur / Jhumritalaiya / Jaunpur. This guys is going to send us to a village today!)

There are some more… will write about them when I remember.
